Soshiro Matsubara
Sleeves of Desire
17 May – 31 August 2025
Opening: 16 May 2025, 7 PM
Through installation, ceramics, painting, drawing and sculpture Soshiro Matsubara creates magical interiors that take a personal look at the depths of human emotions. His spatial installations explore intoxication, obsessiveness, longing, and kinks through found objects, his own artworks, and historical anecdotes.
They question perception, memory and constructions of identity through black humor, sophisticated art historical references, aesthetic dandyism and iconographic eccentricity. Through built structures and architectural interventions, Matsubara plays with the emotional and psychological relationship to space and personal memory.
For the exhibition, the artist develops a new installation that responds to the Kunstverein's glass architecture and spiral staircase. The exhibition will be his first institutional solo exhibition in Germany.
Soshiro Matsubara (*1980 Hokkaido, JP, lives in Vienna) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and has been part of exhibitions at MOCO - Museum of Contemporary Art, Rome (2021), and FRAC Lorraine, Metz (2024), among others.
