Renata Lucas
a minor course correction
14 June – 4 October 2026
Opening: Saturday, 13 June 2026, 5 pm
How do built environments shape our perception, our behavior, and our social interactions? To explore these questions, Brazilian artist Renata Lucas uses her conceptual works to intervene in existing situations, architectural structures, and social spaces. Her new exhibition at the Dortmunder Kunstverein, a minor course correction, engages with the urban and structural transformations of the former Union Brewery site surrounding the institution. Until 2020, the site was home to “Utopia”, a self-managed skatepark that served as a hub for a large community of skaters in Dortmund, situated right at the city’s creative core. For the exhibition, Lucas will transform her work Falha (2003/2024) into a skateable landscape, thereby — at least temporarily — reinstating a piece of counterculture on the U-Areal grounds. The architecture of the Kunstverein, always situated on the threshold between inside and outside, takes on particular significance in this context. Methodologically, the exhibition title a minor course correction also reflects Renata Lucas’s approach to her own oeuvre — specifically, its multimedia repurposing as a platform for sound, interaction, and performance – as well as the artist’s role in continually questioning established norms and creating structures that facilitate social encounter, participation, and change.
Renata Lucas (b. 1971 in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil) has participated internationally with her site-specific interventions, including at documenta (2012) as well as the Istanbul (2011), Venice (2009), and São Paulo (2006) Biennales. She has held solo exhibitions at venues including the Pinacoteca de São Paulo (2024), Performance Space New York (2019), and the Secession in Vienna (2014). In Germany, she received the Schering Stiftung Art Award in 2009 and has maintained a permanent installation at KW in Berlin ever since.
