LECTURE
by Ruth Schneider (research associate at Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus, Hanau): When does jewelry have power? Between Non-Verbal Potentials and Constraining Dominances of Adorning Practices
As a medium of non-verbal communication, jewelry reflects not only individuality but also society and group affiliation. When worn, it forms a bridge between the seemingly private and the public. Despite the intense emotional attachments that jewelry can evoke, it is often dismissed as mere decoration and subject to reduction. This lecture explores how jewelry can break with such reductions, queer and expand narratives. Jewelry can be protest, jewelry can hold power, move masses, and preserve stories.
Ruth Schneider (*1992) works as a research associate at Deutsches Goldschmiedehaus, Hanau and is co-host of the podcast Glanz&Kante. Schneider’s research focuses on the narration and visuality of jewelry, body-related objects, and practices of adornment. Most recently, Schneider’s essay Bling. Kaum Glitzer appeared in the anthology Schmucken published by Logos Verlag Berlin.
