This erotic anime by Eiichi Yamamoto is set in medieval Europe and loosely based on La Sorcière (1862), an essay by French writer Jules Michelet that recounts the fate of the peasant couple Jeanne and Jean. Rich in art historical references and psychedelic imagery, the film was initially well received at the 1973 Berlinale but later criticized for its depictions of sexual violence. Viewed today as a story of emancipation and in light of contemporary discourses around witches as feminist figures, the film invites a new reading and thoughtful discussion.
