40 Years

Dortmunder Kunstverein

Saturday, 30 November 2024, from 2:30 PM

We are excited to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Dortmunder Kunstverein on November 30, 2024 – exactly four decades and four days after its founding. Together, we will be carried by the wind of the past 40 years through an air show with artist kites and a diverse program. Let’s raise a toast to the past, present, and future encounters and experiences with art: To an open and active free scene of art enthusiasts and artists, bridging the Ruhr area with the world.

musical performance: Soya Arakawa - Shoumi/正味
During the performance, Arakawa uses different locations at the Kunstverein, playing the three-stringed Japanese instrument Sanshin and singing both traditional Okinawan folk songs and improvised pieces. As a child, Arakawa could only sing one song properly, a tune that he varied in many ways and helped to pass the boredom on the way to school. This playful approach connects Arakawa with folk songs – including those traditionally sung on the way to fieldwork, to accompany monotonous tasks.

6 PM
concert: Peter Strickmann - Totter Passel
A self-constructed pneumatic instrument takes center stage, animating small puddles of water with constant winds to create a sonic vocabulary of sequencer mimicry patterns, fake synth sounds, and miniature water percussion. Supporting roles are played by feedback manipulations and self-made wind instruments such as a roof-lath saxophone and a cup bassoon.
