DISCUSSION
Autofictional writing in art

While literature and visual art are still largely perceived separately in German-speaking countries, the interdisciplinarity of writing artists and art-reflexive writers in New York has its own tradition: from Jill Johnston, Bernadette Mayer and Moyra Davey to Eileen Myles and Lynne Tillman, whose fictional art critic figure Madame Realism was the subject of a doctorate by the theorist Dr. Isabel Mehl.

The three discussion partners on this evening are united by their interest in precisely those blurred boundaries that they have individually researched in New York in recent years and transferred into their own work. In Dortmund, they will talk together about writing in art as a feminist practice, because "in the midst of self-reflection, sensory overload and a male-dominated art world, Madame Realism explores anew what position a looking and writing subject can take." (in: Isabel Mehl, Im Zeichen des Zweifel(n)s. Madame Realism oder: Die Funktion der Fiktion der Kunstkritik., Lüneburg, 2020)
