Philip Wiegard translates techniques and aesthetics from craft, hobby culture, and applied arts practices into a contemporary artistic context. The pictorial surface of his polymer clay mosaics is neither painted nor printed, but composed of colored modeling clay and then hardened in an oven. Originating from a virtual collaboration with the New Zealand biologist and artist Kim Snowden, the title refers on the one hand to the aesthetics and ethics of this exchange of knowledge, and on the other to the depicted cell membrane, whose separating structure makes both connection and division possible in the first place.
Philip Wiegard (*1977, lives in Berlin) is a visual artist working with sculpture, photography, FIMO, and painting. He studied at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK) and at Hunter College in New York. His works have been exhibited internationally, often in conjunction with workshops, including at Galerie Crone, Vienna (2024), HKW, Berlin (2021), Between Bridges, Berlin, and the Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona (both 2018). Philip Wiegard’s bar, laboratory, and workshop space Wendy vs Tinkerbell has been a permanent installation at the Dortmunder Kunstverein since 2017 and will remain on view until 2027.
