Inspired by the woodcut Yejiri Station, Province of Suruga (1832) by Katsushika Hokusai and Jeff Wall’s photograph A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai) (1993), hobbypopMUSEUM’s Stimmen im Wind (Voices in the Wind) is a tribute to the motif of a stormy landscape. From a palette of impasto paint strokes on a classic diamond-shaped kite, a string extends from a paintbrush to four portraits. Just as the papers and head coverings in the two reference artworks are swept into the air, the portraits here dance in the wind, observing the scene below. In this way, the kite transforms from a carrier of color and image into a painting tool, becoming an active participant itself.
hobbypopMUSEUM is a collective founded in Düsseldorf in 1998, currently consisting of Sophie von Hellermann, Christian Jendreiko, Matthias Lahme, Dietmar Lutz, André Niebur, and Marie-Céline Schäfer. Their works have been exhibited at venues including M HKA, Antwerp, in 2015, and the Dortmund Kunstverein in 2018 (curated by Oriane Durand). In 2019, the comprehensive catalog Saved Images was published by Distanz in collaboration with the Dortmunder Kunstverein.
This year, as a homage to the rebellious power of the wind, we are presenting kites designed by nine artists. These will be showcased, flown, and subsequently offered as Jahresgaben during the anniversary celebration of the Dortmunder Kunstverein on November 30, 2024. The project was developed in collaboration with the artist Moritz Englebert, kindly supported by Stellfeld & Ernst GmbH.
