The Proust or Madeleine effect refers to that moment when a taste or smell experience suddenly evokes specific memories. The preliminary study for the series Tag und Nacht im Leben einer Bäckerei (Day and Night in the Life of a Bakery) by Vittorio Brodmann (*1987 Ettingen, CH, lives in Berlin and Zurich) uses photographic portraits of bread sommeliers during quality control, turning the loaf of bread and the picture space into a multisensory projection surface for personal memories. Moreover, the moment of quality control parodies the moment of verifying one’s own productions. Eight works from the series were part of the Schlaraffenland exhibition.
Vittorio Brodmann studied at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste and the Haute École d’Art et de Design in Geneva. His paintings address issues of the painting process, shifting between narrative, abstract, self-sabotaging, formal, and similar approaches. Brodmann’s works have been featured in solo exhibitions, including at the Fitzpatrick Gallery, Paris (2024), Galerie Gregor Staiger, Milan (2023), Kunstraum Schwaz (2022), Kunstverein Nürnberg (2019), and Kunsthalle Bern (2016). His work has also been shown in group exhibitions at the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh, Arles (2024); Kölnischer Kunstverein (2024); Kunsthalle Zurich (2023); Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem (2018), and MAMCO in Geneva (2018/2017).
