I. S. Kalter

Shin Hour (Schicksalsstunde)

Year: 2024
Material: Mixed Media
Dimensions: 120 x 52 x 25 cm
Edition: Unique

The flying object Schicksalsstunde is part of the Fleshworks series, which I. S. Kalter has been developing since 2019. When in flight, the kite wrapped in layers of reddish-drenched paper towels becomes an image of the legitimate and rightful struggle for democracy when it is undermined from within. The kite can be flown either before or during moments that are critically challenging for individuals of the avant-garde. It serves as a reminder that democracies can die piece by piece and at a rapid pace—and that life becomes harder when they do.

I. S. Kalter (*1986, lives in Tel Aviv) works with sculpture and painting. His works have recently been featured in international exhibitions, including at the Fondation Pernod Ricard, Paris (2024); Kunstverein Nürnberg - Albrecht Dürer Gesellschaft (2024); MOUNTAINS, Berlin (2023); Documenta XV, Kassel (2023); Mishkan Museum of Art, Ein Harod (2023); Dortmunder Kunstverein (2022); Tel Aviv Museum of Art (2021); and CCA: Tel Aviv - Yafo (2020).

This year, as a homage to the rebellious power of the wind, we are presenting kites designed by nine artists. These will be showcased, flown, and subsequently offered as Jahresgaben during the anniversary celebration of the Dortmunder Kunstverein on November 30, 2024. The project was developed in collaboration with the artist Moritz Englebert, kindly supported by Stellfeld & Ernst GmbH.
