Dinosaur refers to the current commission by Iván Argote for the plinth of the High Line in New York, both in title and representation. The pigeon, reproduced there in the size of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, results from the artist's long-standing engagement with the symbols of public space and the question of which figures gain recognition there and for what reasons. Alongside fictional dismantling scenarios of colonialist sculptures, Argote has repeatedly worked with the figure of the pigeon as the first inhabitant of public squares. The painted kite now brings the pigeon named Dinosaur back into the air. Since 2019, the High Line has been hosting a rotating art installation every 18 months, curated by Cecilia Alemani.
Iván Argote (*1983 in Bogotá, COL, lives in Paris) works with sculpture, drawing, photography, and video. His works have recently been shown at the Venice Biennale (2024) and in numerous exhibitions worldwide. In 2022, he was nominated for the prestigious Prix Marcel Duchamp. His works are part of major museum collections, such as the Centre Pompidou, Paris, and the Guggenheim, New York. In 2021, the Dortmunder Kunstverein presented his first institutional solo exhibition in Germany.
This year, as a homage to the rebellious power of the wind, we are presenting kites designed by nine artists. These will be showcased, flown, and subsequently offered as Jahresgaben during the anniversary celebration of the Dortmunder Kunstverein on November 30, 2024. The project was developed in collaboration with the artist Moritz Englebert, kindly supported by Stellfeld & Ernst GmbH.
