Christian Freudenberger's Jahresgaben refer to alternative actions and initiatives in Dortmund between 1975 and 1985. Drawn in acrylic, they take up the leaflets that were distributed during these actions. Freudenberger has schematized their message by replacing their texts with abstract, meandering, scribbled surfaces in no more than three colors. Although their content is no longer legible, the energy contained in their utopian demands for work and housing is reflected in the rapid hand movements. In this way, he raises not only current social questions, but also questions inherent to art about the ability of images to produce identifiable signs.

Christian Freudenberger (*1971 in Dortmund, lives in Dortmund) studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. In addition to solo exhibitions at DREI in Cologne (2017, 2014, 2011), the Krefelder Kunstverein (2012), and the Chinati Foundation, Marfa, US, (2004), his works have been shown in group exhibitions at venues including the Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Siegen (2015), Eastside Project Birmingham, UK (2013), Van Horn, Düsseldorf (2010), and the Bonner Kunstmuseum (2006).
