The silhouettes show scenes that reflect Hoda Tawakol's preoccupation with the power of the gaze and the associated mechanisms of control and prey. In both works, the ornamental arrangement of the cuts is a transformative design element that connects the printed front and painted back of the sheet three-dimensionally in the picture through targeted openings.

Saffron, Musk and Amber #1 is composed of the image of the mosque vault, a falcon and a date that looks as if it were a bleeding sex.

Saffron, Musk and Amber #2 refers to Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres' Grande Odalisque (1814) and the associated Orientalism that had spread in Europe since the Napoleonic campaign in Egypt (1798-1801).

Hoda Tawakol (*1968 in London, lives and works in Hamburg) studied fine art under Andreas Slominski at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Hamburg. Her works have been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum for Art in Wood, Philadelphia (2023) and the Kunsthalle Schirn, Frankfurt am Main (2020).
