With her Jahresgaben "Introductions" and "History of Doubt", artist Alison Yip questions the relationship between unicorns and (young) women as a dangerous, abysmal, and sensual encounter. Formally and thematically, her works refer to well-known historical narratives, which she nevertheless allows to fade in her paintings, reversing and alienating them. "Introductions" resembles the cover of a fairy tale book in its layout and shows the encounter between the two figures in contrasting extreme perspectives. "History of Doubt" focuses on the painful and erotic aspects of the relationship, referring to art-historical depictions of Lucretia and Raphael's Lady and the Unicorn (1505-1507).
Alison Yip (born in Calgary, Canada, lives in Brussels and Berlin) studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary (CA) and in Germany at the art academies in Düsseldorf and Hamburg. She presented her first solo exhibition at the Dortmunder Kunstverein in 2020/21 and has participated in exhibitions at the Beursschouwburg (2019), the Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof (2019), and the Vancouver Art Gallery (2016), among others.
