Joint-showcase of Japan Media Arts Festival and CODED CULTURES Festival

Das internationale Partnerprojekt Exchange Emergences zeigt aktuelle Werke japanischer, österreichischer und slowenischer KünstlerInnen im Dortmunder Kunstverein. Die Kooperation zwischen dem Japan Media Arts Festival (jp) und dem Coded Cultures Festival (at) wurde während des Japanisch-Österreichischen Jahres 2009 etabliert und richtet die Aufmerksamkeit auf Projektkulturen und deren kreative Codes an der Schnittstelle von Kunst, Wissenschaft, Technologie und Design.

The international partner project Exchange Emergences shows the latest works of Japanese, Austrian and Slovenian artists at the Dortmunder Kunstverein.
The cooperation between the Japan Media Arts Festival (jp) and Coded Cultures festival (at) was established during the Japan - Austria Year 2009 and focused on project cultures and their creative codes at the intersection of art, science, technology and design.

Common Flowers/White Out benutzt genetisch veränderte blaue Nelken der Firma Suntory Flowers als einen Versuchsorganismus. Ziel ist es, die genetische Veränderung, die für die blaue Farbe verantwortlich ist, zu beseitigen, und die Blume in ihren 'originalen' weißen Zustand zurückzuversetzen. Diese doppelte genetische Veränderung geht den Konzepten von Veränderung, Natur und Manipulation nach und fragt nach einem Gegenmodell für unsere gemeinsame Bio-Zukunft.

Common Flowers/White Out uses Suntory Flowers’ genetically modified blue carnation as a model organism. The goal of this project is to remove the genetic modification responsible for the blue colour and return the flower to its 'original' white state. This double genetic manipulation questions concepts of change, nature and manipulation and asks for a counter-model of our shared biofuture.

Klanginstallation/Sound Installation, 2009

Das Herzstück dieser akustischen Erscheinung bildet die Kombination von einzelnen reaktiven Einheiten. Sie generieren Klänge, sobald  die Umgebungslautstärke ein bestimmtes Maß überschreitet, und reagieren mit ihrer akustischen  Umwelt. Durch Verschaltung mehrerer Hundert dieser elektroakustischen Elemente im Raum entstehen unscharfe, endlose Klangschleifen, die an die Geräuschkulisse eines Froschteichs oder eines Ameisenhaufens erinnern.

The core element of this acoustic  phenomenon is the combination of single reactive units. They react to their acoustic environment when the surrounding ambient noise exceeds a certain level for a certain time span by generating sounds. By connecting hundreds of these electro-acoustic  units in space they form fuzzy, endless acoustic loops which are reminiscent of the frog pond or anthill soundscapes.

Origami Space Race

Origami Space Race is an initiative for alternative space programmes based on open source strategies. Literally, it is a race for the development of the best origami spacecraft. The project’s main aim is a turn-ing point in the approach to space technology towards greener technologies.

Origami Space Race ist ein Initiativprojekt, das sich für alternative Weltraumprogramme einsetzt,die auf Open-Source-Strategien basieren. Es handelt sich buchstäblich um ein Wettrennen um das beste Origami-Raumschiff. Das Hauptziel des Projekts ist eine Wende in der Herangehensweise an die Weltraumtechnologie hin zu ökologischeren Technologien.

Braun Tube Jazz Band
Sound Installation/Klanginstallation, Performance 2009

Durch Ausprobieren und Herumspielen mit Braunschen Röhrenfernsehern hat Ei Wada ihre innere Funktionsweise aufgedeckt.Er entwickelte eine Spieltechnik, bei der er seine Hände als Pseudo-Antennen und die Fernseher in Verbindung mit computergesteuerten Videorekordern als Musikinstrumente bzw. ‚Licht-Synthesizer‘ benutzt.

Through a process of trial and error while tinkering with Braun tube televisions, Ei Wada discovered their inner workings. He developed a playing technique using his hands as pseudo antennas and the televisions and PC-controlled video decks as musical instruments, or ‘light synthesizers’.
